Couponing Classes

I have been asked about maybe doing a coupon class. I was wondering how much interest there might be in a class. I would really like your input. Even if you are not in the Twin Tiers region of NY, you can still comment if you'd like.

Would you attend a class on couponing if it was free? What if there was a small fee like $3-$5?

When would be the best time to have a class? Weekdays or Weekends? During the day or at night?

What kind of things would you like to learn about? Would you just like to learn about couponing or would you like to learn about frugal shopping in general? What about other frugal things you can do to save money for your family?

I would love to have any input you would like to give me. Thanks.

More Tips from Frugal Dad

I was reading through the list again on Frugal Dad's website and found some more tips on saving money on food. I thought I would share them with you.
  • Taking lunch to work or school everyday saves a fortune. If you feel you need to go out once in a while, you can plan to eat out once a week, for instance on Fridays.
  • When a recipe calls for a pound of meat, use 3/4 of a pound instead. You will never know the difference and be saving money. If you do this for three meals, you will have enough extra for another meal.
  • Eating out should be a special treat. Maybe limit it to once or twice a month. Not only will it save you money but also save your waistline.
  • When you do order out, have your younger children share a kids' meal or share your food with them.
  • Buy meat when you can find it for less than $2 a pound. Stock up and freeze it when you get a good price. Buy a nice steak for special occasions.
  • Practice portion control. Actually eat the recommended serving of a food. This will not only save you money, but also keep your weight down.
  • Plan your meals for the week or the month. This helps when you do your shopping list and helps with making dinner each night. It doesn't have to be followed exactly and mine usually gets shuffled around quite a bit. Just cross the meal off when you make it so you know you have used those ingredients. This also helps you stay away from take out.
  • Buy meat in bulk (when it's cheaper) and portion into 3/4 pound portions. You can either freeze at that point, or what I do is I cook it up and then freeze it. Then when I need to make dinner, I just throw the meat in the micro to defrost and then throw it in the meal. It's quicker and easier and helps you avoid eating out.
  • Drink water from the tap (or get one of those filtering pitchers). Cut down on soda and coffee. This will save you tons.
  • Making coffee at home is cheaper than buying it at a coffee shop. Even if you buy really expensive coffee beans, you will save money doing it this way.
  • The less you are in stores, the less likelihood you will overspend. Consider buying the bulk of your foods every other week or even once a month.
  • Take only cash when you shop. Whatever you have budgeted for that shopping trip is what you take. Leave credit and debit cards in the car. This will make you have to be more aware of how much you are spending. Take a calculator or use a scrap paper to write a running total.
  • Buy generics when they are cheaper than buying a name brand with a coupon. Many are of superb quality and are made by companies that make the name brands.
  • Try to run all your errands on one day. If this isn't possible, what about stopping on the way home from work to run your errand?
  • Make a list. Making a list of the things keeps you on track. It keeps you from buying things that you don't need and you make sure that you get the things you do need.

Words of the Week Wednesday

I came across a wonderful blog recently = Frugal Dad. He is very insightful and the content is always really well written. Today he posted a collection of 122 ways to trim your budget. This is an awesome collection of different tips from readers and also from him. There are some on there that I haven't even heard of before!

I thought I would share with you the ones pertaining to food shopping and couponing and then you can go read the rest of the list yourself. You can read the rest of the list here.

Some of the tips include:

  • Using two coupons when you buy something Buy One Get One Free
  • Sign up with various manufacturers and stores to get coupons and special offers
  • Spend about 10 minutes a week cleaning out your coupons and getting rid of ones that are expired. I usually do this on Saturday before I get a new messload of coupons on Sunday.
  • Don't just rely on coupons from the newspaper. Other good sources include the internet and magazines.
  • Don't forget that places like Family Dollar take coupons also. They usually have really good prices on cleaning products and when combined with coupon it's even better.
  • Keep your coupons in your car, or better yet, your purse. This way you always have them with you if you come across a great deal.
  • Knowing each store's coupon policy will save you a lot of headache and help make planning your shopping trip more efficient.
  • Know your prices. Knowing what you usually pay on the things you buy the most, will help you know if that sale price is really a good deal or not. Just because it is on sale doesn't mean that it is a good deal. Make it a point to know what the normal price for commonly bought products is at either Walmart or Target. Using a price book (just get a small notebook) might help you find the cheapest. What I did was I kept track of everything on my receipts in a spreadsheet for a while. This told me not only how much I was spending on certain things, but also where I was getting the best prices.
  • Use couponmom.com or afullcup.com to find out what coupons match which sales at what store.
  • Don't buy things unless they are on sale. To be able to do this, you need to have a stockpile. When you get a good deal on things, stock up so you can last until the next time they go on sale.
  • If your store doubles coupons up to 99 cents, you can make out pretty well with those 75 cent coupons. These become $1.50 off and can make your product cheap or even free.
**Hints in purple are the ones I added.

I hope you liked this list. Go check out Frugal Dad's blog for even more tips on saving bunches of money. Do you have any couponing or other frugal tips you would like to add to the list. Leave me a comment letting me know.

Budgeting - Part 2

Last week I started the first part of my series on budgeting and here is the second part. You can find the first part here: Budgeting Part 1.

So, now that you have tracked your expenses for at least a week, you are ready to start working on your monthly budget. I have provided a spreadsheet for you. You can either click on the Word 2007 version or the 97-2003 version. The first page is the Expense Page, the second is the Expense summary which adds them all up for you , and the third sheet is the Monthly Budget sheet which we will be working on today. You can also do this on paper if you so choose. Just list your income for the month and total. List your expected expenses for the month and total. Subtract expenses from income and this is how much you have at the end of the month.

Basically what you are doing is adding up your month's worth of income subtracting the expenses and seeing how much is left over. On the spreadsheet, I put savings at the end, so that if you have extra money at the end of the month you can put it in savings. You may want to automatically put a certain amount in savings a month no matter what and I have provided extra space on the spreadsheet in case you would like to consider it an expense.

In case you downloaded my spreadsheet to use, I was going to walk you through how to fill it out. The first step is to fill in your income for the months. This is pretty easy if your income is steady. If, however, it changes, you may just want to approximate. You can always change it later. Other Income can include such things as income tax refunds, rebates, commission checks, bonuses, etc. The program will automatically sum your income up for each month.

The next step is to work on your expenses. Using your expense summary come up with how much you think you would like to budget for the month in each category. Take into account things that don't happen on a regular basis, like car inspection fees, car maintenance (oil changes, tuneups, etc), school expenses, etc. What I do with these expenses is figure out when I need to pay them and how many months until then, then I take the amount and divide it by the number of months remaining to get how much I should be saving monthly for these expenses. For example if I know I will have to pay my car registration in November I take the $70 and divide it by the remaining months, 7, and put away $10 a month.

The spreadsheet will total your expenses automatically and then it will show you how much money you have left each month. Fill in the savings and/or the vacation percentage if you would like to save for these things. The spreadsheet will also let you change the name of the savings if you would like. This is the percentage of the leftover money that you would like to save. If your Income minus Expenses is negative or you don't have a lot to put into savings, you need to start looking at your budget and finding ways to to trim your budget. The easiest places to start looking to trim are food, household, and leisure type activities. Also look at how much you are spending on eating out.

So there you have it. That is how you do a budget. Just remember that a good budget is constantly changing. If your expenses go up, make sure you change it on the sheet. If you have any questions or comments or anything you would like to add, leave me a comment.

Words of the Week Wednesday

Today I will be just concentrating on one website, versus my usual three. This site is so awesome, that it takes up a full post to explain how awesome it is.

I found this great site on couponing the other day. Jill Cataldo is a real coupon queen. She makes me look really bad with the deals she gets. She was able to get almost $100 worth of groceries for less than $10!!! Isn't that crazy!!! I can only dream about getting that good of deals! But at least it is something to strive for.

Jill has classes in the Chicago area where she teaches super couponing I, II, and III, so if you are in the Midwest, check out her free classes. I would love to teach classes like this in my area, I just don't know if there would be enough interest in classes. Maybe I should look into that.

Jill has been featured on many news shows and in many article (look under the In The Media section in the right hand column). There's some really nice video of her getting tons of groceries for cheap!!! The website also has tons of great information about couponing and even has a forum where you can talk to other coupon users.

Go visit her at http://jillcataldo.com/
